The privatization of the Greek water companies in Athens and Thessaloniki has been frozen

This was the news reported to the General Assembly of the Thessaloniki water company (EYATH) today. Workers representatives cheered the report that the ongoing privatisation of the public company is in direct conflict with a decision of the Council of State which had decreed that the privatization of the Athens water company sought by the Greek government and welcomed by Eurozone President and Dutch Finance minister Dijsselbloem was illegal. The workers, their union and a broad coalition of social movements had already successfully organized a referendum in which 98% of votes cast of nearly 220.000 people said No to the privatization, 18 May 2014. Gericht stoppt Privatisierung der Wasserversorgung in Athen

Ein schlechter Tag für Wasserkonzerne

Ein hohes griechisches Gericht hat die geplante Privatisierung des landesweit größten Wasserversorgers, Athens EYDAP, gestoppt. Das Gericht befürchtet, dass nach einer Privatisierung der Wasserbetriebe die Wasserqualität abnimmt und dadurch die Gesundheit der Menschen gefährdet wird. Sie hält darum eine Privatisierung für unverantwortlich.


Der Berliner Wassertisch hält die Befürchtungen für absolut gerechtfertigt und gratuliert dem Land zu dieser klugen Entscheidung. Hoffentlich wird sie wegweisend für ganz Griechenland!


Wir werten dies auch als einen Erfolg der griechischen Wasseraktivisten Savegreekwater!

Greek top court blocks Athens Water privatisation – report

A top Greek court has blocked the planned privatisation of the country’s biggest water utility Athens Water, the semi-official Athens News Agency (ANA) reported on Sunday, on the grounds the sale could put public health at risk.
