Council of State “listened” to the people: The first big win for water belongs to all of us
The protection of our water from further commercialization and privatization is now a fact and these policies, that would be almost irreversible and turn us further away from our vision for democratic and rational management on a non-for-profit basis of our most valuable of the commons, our water, were averted. The decision of the Council of State for EYDAP is both historic and bold. However, no court decision, even with these characteristics, cannot stand politically strong if it does not express the public’s “sense of justice” and does not take into account the majority of citizens and their will, towards which their institutional representatives (mps and governments) are sometimes deaf.

Es ist ein beunruhigender Trend im Wassersektor, der in rasender Geschwindigkeit weltweit fortschreitet. Die neuen “Wasser-Barone” – die Wall-Street-Banken und elitäre Multimilliardäre – kaufen Wasser auf der ganzen Welt auf, und zwar in einem noch nie dagewesenen Tempo.
Jahrzehntelang galt die Wasserversorgung als wichtige Staatsaufgabe. Erst in den 1990er Jahren privatisierten viele Länder die Versorgung mit dem lebensnotwendigen Nass.

Wasserversorgung doch in TTIP-Verhandlungsmasse
Ein Jahr nach dem Start der Verhandlungen über das transatlantische Freihandelsabkommen TTIP haben sich die Befürchtungen der Kritiker bestätigt. Ein am Freitag vom europäischen Dachverband der Gewerkschaften veröffentlichtes „Leak“ zeigt, dass die Wasserversorgung sehr wohl Gegenstand in den aktuellen Verhandlungsrunden ist.

Viel zu viele Tiere auf viel zu wenig Land – wo industriell Fleisch produziert wird, ist Gülle Sondermüll, der entsorgt werden muss. Aus überdüngten Feldern sickert Nitrat in tiefe Erdschichten und vergiftet das Trinkwasser von morgen. Schon heute kämpfen Wasserwerke mit steigenden Belastungen.

The big news this week is an important leak detailing what the European Commission will offer the US in the fields of services and investment. It’s super fresh: the document is currently being circulated to the governments of the EU’s Member States, and comments remain open until 30 June, so we are gaining important insights into real-time discussions that have hitherto been completely hidden from us.

It turns out that TISA forms a kind of unholy trinity together with TTIP and the Trans-Pacific Partnership agreement (TPP). Between the three of them, they aim to define the terms for world trade for the coming years: TTIP covers transatlantic trade and investment, TPP the transpacific trade, and TISA global trade in services. TISA involves around 50 countries including the European Union. What TTIP, TPP and TISA have in common is the US, which seeks to use these three treaties to cement its position as they key player in trade and services. The idea is obviously to set the terms for those before China takes over as the world’s biggest economy.
